The development of the protected Bandvagn (Bv) 206 S, successor to the renowned Bv 206 D, commenced in the late 1980s. In the early 1990s, the German Armed Forces showed interest in the vehicle. Since 1985, its predecessor, the Bv 206 D Husky, had been used successfully, but the German Army sought a protected vehicle to fill a gap in its airborne forces' vehicle range. Consequently, the Bundeswehr ordered 31 Bv 206 S Mobile Medical Team (MMT) Vehicles in 2002, with four later converted to Mobile Evacuation Physician Team (MEPT) Vehicles. In 2004, 75 Bv 206 S Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) variants were purchased, followed by 81 Command Post Vehicles in 2005. To date, 189 'light armoured, air-transportable' Bv 206 S vehicles have been procured by the Bundeswehr.
